We had a road runner hanging out right next to our sliding glass doors. I managed to get photos and a video with my iphone. I went to get my real camera and of course when I came back, he was gone!
I had good news at my appointment with the surgeon Friday. I was told I was healing well, could take walks as long as I want, and I can swim and drive.
Saturday morning I took my first walk. I kept it short because I decided it was good to take it easy and not overdo it. The surgeon gave me an ankle brace and told me no more boot! Woohoo. After my walk, where I will admit, I was huffing and puffing and terribly out of shape (How does that happen in seven weeks?) I drove myself to the grocery store. Then I got in the pool.
I picked up mail, did laundry and cooked. Sunday I was sore and tired. I may have kept the walk short, but I ended up overdoing it in spite of being cautious. I think I was overly excited to be cut loose and free!
If you’ve been injured, did you lose fitness quickly? Or were you able to retain your level of fitness?

I blew out my knee during the first Covid wave. Weeks on the couch keeping it elevated, months of constant pain. And to be honest? I’ve never been able to get back to normal lever of physical activity.
😰
Love your roadrunner!
But can’t see the video. It’s marked private.
I’m in the ice and elevate life right now. I totally relate. Other people can watch the video and have commented on it. Isn’t that strange?
I can see it now.
He’s wonderful!
What’s he eating… bugs?
I looked out there and it’s something that blew off a tree. It looks like some sort of seeds.
As I get older it takes longer to get back into it if I’ve been less active. After my six weeks out post surgery it took awhile to get back up to snuff…but setbacks come quicker than they used to
I totally agree with you. That’s what I’m experiencing now. I couldn’t believe how my first walk was so difficult.
I can sympathize
😊
Walk. Swim. Drive. Yay!!! You are free to roam around now.
It’s amazing to see the contrast between being housebound and being told you can do whatever you want. But with the temperatures around 105 degrees, there’s not that much of a change!
No major injuries for me but because I normally walk everyday if I miss a day I feel the stiffness later in the evening. Broadening my exercise options is one of the goals I have once I’m settled in CO. The community center has water aerobics and lap swim times, plus all the trail systems literally in our backyard will provide more challenging/varied walking opportunities. It’s also the time (age) to really be working on flexibility and balance so I really need to adjust my routines and make time for those things. I know that I’ve lost muscle mass and in general my joints take a lot of force and that makes them cranky 😉
I totally agree with you that it’s time to work on flexibility and balance. This latest injury set me back, but I need to keep working on it. My PT is adding balance to my schedule this week. It sounds like you’ve got lots of opportunity in CO.
I like your alligator.
I do too! I hang onto the alligator to get in and out of the pool. The former owners left him.
I love this video. I’ve had a long list of joint and bone surgeries but I did retain my fitness pretty well
I’m sorry you had to go through surgeries, but it’s good you kept up fitness. I think this one has to do with getting older. Hopefully I’ll bounce back.
You will my friend. You have good physical health.
Thank you! 😊
You’re welcome
🥰
💞
I feel like it might take longer to get back to normal the older we get. My husband was the same way after he broke his leg- it just took time.
I love your roadrunner!
Thanks! Yes, it’s taking time. I have a month until vacation, so I’m working on getting back to some shape.
Ah shit, time to snap up some ACME stock!
😅
I find that as I get older, the right hip benefits from exercise of any kind. What helps is seeing YouTubers in the same predicament and doing the same slow steps towards healing. It does work but sometimes I feel more lie a flamingo on show trying to strut my feathers while walking a straight line.
My PT is having me practice walking properly. It tough to remember all the time.
Ah yes, I also practice that with my heel and toe placement. One leg is a little shorter than the other and I have orthopedic inserts in my shoes now which help. I keep doing the exercises.
Yes, it’s the heel and toe exercise. My surgeon had me order inserts too, but I don’t know when they’ll arrive.
Yay! So happy to see this great report…walking, driving and pool time! Before you know it you’ll be back to your pre-procedure level of energy and stamina. So happy for you! 🥰
Thank you for the encouraging words! I have to make sure I don’t over do it so I can continue to improve.
Sending hugs! Sounds like a good game plan. Xo! 🥰
Thanks! 😊
I love the synergy between a road runner and you getting back to walking and swimming. I’m sure you are too sophisticated to “Beep beep” but you are on the move! Congratulations on healing well and navigating the ups and downs!
Thank you! I was excited to finally get a photo of the road runner. He is so fast that I haven’t been able to get any pictures. He found some seeds or pods right outside our sliding glass doors, so he was hanging out for awhile.
Love the video. Good news about getting about even though it wasn’t the best idea to over do it
I’m glad you liked the video. Yes, I have to pace myself. I have a ton of metal in my ankle now and I can’t expect to be 100% in one day!
Oh my this confirms it. I always joke that you have a bird sanctuary . . . but I couldn’t be more wrong. You’ve got your very own Warner Bros Looney Tunes Road Runner cartoon. A coyote last week. A road runner. What’s next ACME Corporation with explosives and other tools next door? Ha, ha.
Ha! Please not ACME! I was thinking of two days last week of coyotes and this week of the road runner 😅
What’s next Bugs Bunny? Daffy Duck? Love it.
We do have bunnies every day! Have to add their photos in the mix! 😂
Very cool to get good shots of a road runner! I see them, but getting a picture? No way. Around here, it’s the weasels. They’re bold and curious, so you can get pretty close, but I’ve never gotten a picture, even from a distance. (Of course, it would help if I actually had a camera!)
After my knee replacement, I was astonished that during the time it took for surgery, my quadriceps became essentially useless. How does that happen?
The road runner and weasels must be related. I had an ACL replacement in 2018 after a ski accident. I recovered quicker back then. At least it seemed like it in my recall of events!
So glad you got your doctor’s go ahead! Understandable that you might have gone a little wild your first day. Wishing you steady progress as the days go by. 💞
I learned my lesson and am trying moderation! I went to PT today and they had the same perspective as you.
I don’t have an injury, thank God. Complete healing prayers for you, Wickham. I enjoyed the Roadrunner video.
I’m glad you liked the video. And thank you for the healing prayers!
You’re most welcome, Wickham. Have a wonderful day as you are!
Thank you!
