Mystery solved!

Olive sitting at the kitchen counter.

Weird things have been going on lately. It’s stressing me out. First the dishwasher quit working, next it was the garbage disposal.

Then the power went out and I wrote about my mishaps with the garage door HERE.

Then I mistakenly threw out a Costco gift card we received for having solar installed. I had a stack of junk mail to recycle — and the Costco letter — which I hadn’t opened yet got mixed in.

The next day, it occurred to me that the Costco letter was in the recycling bin. But of course it was recycling day and the bin was empty! Costco was great about replacing the gift card, although I lost a night’s sleep fretting about it.

We hired a serviceman to fix the dishwasher. He had tools to diagnose it and said several motors were out and it would cost $1,000 to repair it.

I looked at the paperwork from the prior homeowners and it was installed in 2014. We decided to buy a new dishwasher. It arrived but it was broken. I’m waiting for the new dishwasher to come in.

In the meantime, I called the garbage disposal company and over the phone they had me unplug and plug things in the outlet under the sink. They told me it was an electrical problem, not an appliance issue.

Duh! My synapsis snapped and I realized the dishwasher and the garbage disposal are plugged in the same outlet. They would both start and then suddenly stop after a minute.

The electricians came yesterday morning. They called their boss when they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. After consulting they figured it out.

“The neutral wire was tied into a 220v circuit, so technician untied it, resolving the issue and converting the circuit back to a 120v circuit.”

The electricians

The solar people upgraded our electrical panel three weeks ago and they made a mistake. My problems with the dishwasher and garbage disposal happened at that time. I didn’t make the connection. Instead, I thought everything was breaking down at once. At least the solar company is picking up the bill for the electricians.

We were driving back from Costco after a spending spree with our gift card when a rock hit our windshield. I made an appointment with Safelight to have the one inch crack filled. The next day, the crack was 10 inches across. That means a new windshield.

Notice most of our problems are caused by going solar?

Stuff happens. And we don’t have our solar approved by the power company and city yet.

What weird things have you experienced lately? Or is it just me?

  1. I reorganized under my kitchen sink on Monday. Everything was fine. That night we were cleaning up after dinner. I saw water on the floor. There was a hole in the pipe. An actual hole!! I just thought it was odd that the day I reorganize that area, a problem occurs

  2. Well I hope this isn’t going to be an ongoing issue for you EA. Seems like this shouldn’t have been an issue to begin with- not sure how much I would recommend the solar company if they are that good at messing up the rest of your house when they install their products. Yikes!

  3. It’s lucky you don’t live in a third world country like ours, because your problems would be blamed on Djjins! I’m glad they found a cause.

  4. Something similar happened at the barn. One Friday the washer stopped working. We thought the washer was broken. On Monday someone told me the iPad we use to sign in wasn’t working. I realized they were plugged into the same outlet and the iPad wasn’t charging. I found the breaker box, found the problem and the outlet worked again.

  5. Whoa – I love how you connected everything – even the rock in the windshield on the way to Costco to spend the solar gift card. I’m so sorry for all these problems but in a way knowing that they are all connected seems hopeful that you can solve them. Congratulations on solving the mystery!

    • This morning I got an email from the power company that said the inspection failed! They said the reasons why we’re on a door hanger and online. There’s no door hanger and nothing online. The saga continues! 🥹

      • Just wondering EA- perhaps you aren’t the only home with this issue/company. Maybe the power company is finding enough failures out there that they don’t know who has door notices/online alerts or who is who! So sorry this is happening.

  6. Wow…what a cascade of unfortunate twists. Like others have said, amazing how you’re seeing the connections between issues…but I’m so sorry… it’s like a never-ending loop. I think you deserve a new title or two? Inspector E.A.? Special Detective Elizabeth? That aside, I enjoyed seeing Olive’s expression. As if she’s saying, ‘Hey mom, what’s going on!? Figure it out…I’ll wait. And by the way, got any snacks while I’m here?” 😎

    • The story continued today with an email from the power company stating the inspection failed and they left a hanger with the reasons why. No hanger. So I called and found out they didn’t have a gate code and haven’t done an inspection! I guess it was a form letter email. Yes, Olive is my joy right now! She’s keeping me sane and smiling 😊

      • Oh my goodness…my visual sense is running wild…circles…within circles…on top of circles. If Olive is keeping you sane and smiling, then I say give her all the treats she can handle. She looks like a love, and you can use all the camaraderie — cat-wise or otherwise – that you can get it. You know you’ll need to keep us posted about what comes next, right? 😘😘😘

      • I feel like getting back in my PJs and reading an Elin Hilderbrand book with Olive on my lap. It’s about all I can handle today! I hope there’s nothing “next” 😂

  7. OH gosh! Sorry about everything! My friend just got a crack in their windshield from a rock as well! She wanted to send their bill for a new windshield to Amtrak! They were supposed to take the train to Florida, but Amtrak cancelled on them at the last minute so they had to drive !
Sure hope you get everything working again and can maintain your sanity in the meantime!

  8. My mom always used to say when it rains, it pours, and now we fully understand that sentiment. What a domino effect that solar company has had on the rest of your life and kitchen, the heart of the home! I would be pulling my hair out by now and you appear so calm. I can’t wait to hear what happens next! And I apologize in advance that I’m being entertained by your troubles. Hope it gets settled soon. Hugs, C
