I have only seen Red and Mrs. a few times since we got back home from Hawaii for the New Year. I was disappointed with the photos I took. They were blurry, fuzzy and altogether not good. While I was taking photos of my quail, Red showed up and posed for me on the pink flamingo. I kept trying to snap photos, but my camera wasn’t cooperating. There was a large “E” on the screen.
Then I exchanged the camera battery, thinking that might be the issue. It wasn’t. I glanced back at my laptop to see the dongle plugged in with a card reader. The SD card wasn’t in my camera. No wonder the photos of Red weren’t going to happen.
Red flew away. I had to be content with quail photos.

A female quail acting as “look out” in the tree. This is normally a man’s job.

A male doing his job.
Then he flew up into the tree from the rock.

While in Hawaii, I received an email from my photography professor. He said the class is no more. I had registered for Spring semester which was to begin this month and run until May. There were five others in the class along with me. The class is by invitation only, so there’s no signing up if the professor didn’t think you’d be a good fit for the class. He told me before I joined that everyone is dedicated to learning and improving in photography. That everyone is on the same learning curve, just at different points along the way.
I’m sad the class won’t continue. But in the meantime, I’ll continue working on my learning curve, wanting to improve my photography. What’s really sad is that professor said after 26 years of working at the college, he was sent an email coldly telling him he was no longer employed.
I’m starting off the New Year with a very light calendar. No more ladies’ group, newsletter, photography class. Even the neighborhood coffee has ended. With all this free time, I’m going to get back to my focus on writing. I have several projects and manuscripts that need my attention.
What would you do with a cleared calendar?
Is there a project you’d like to start on or continue?

Beautiful quail photos!
They’re such divine little creatures…
They have so much personality, or maybe it’s just the top knot.
I’m sorry the class won’t continue EA. It’s hard (for me at least) not to speculate as to all the reasons why it might not be happening but I’m sure one has to involve cost cutting. I’m trying to find a good fit for some volunteering. I have a few options 🙂 There are lots of interesting online courses as well and it’s been a long time since I’ve participated in those. I’ve planned some projects too, thinking that we’d be snowed in long before January but that hasn’t happened so I’ve still be outside a lot while I can.
Thanks. I will miss photography class. It sounds like you have lots of good options to explore in your new home. I got involved right away after we moved. It did help me get adjusted and meet people. Now I think I’ll enjoy the quiet time and work on my projects before signing up for anything new.
I’m sorry to hear about the cancelled class. What a disappointment! Well this gives you more time for other things…you’ll find your way and soon you’ll be busy busy busy! But…take time for yourself! xo PS Love the photos as always!
Thank you! Yes, it was a blow to get the email about photography class. It seems heartless to let a 26-year employee go like that. I’m going to enjoy not being so busy for a bit.
I think your photos are really good, Elizabeth! They are such cute birds, so fancy with the feather on the head. ❤️ I’m sorry that your class won’t be continuing, and the way that the professor was let go is nothing less that incredibly cheesy. I’ve seen this before and find it to be very cowardly. 26 years is a huge investment of one’s life.
Thank you! It totally agree with how the professor was let go was awful. I’ll continue to try to improve on my own. But it was nice to be assigned projects and pushed and given new ideas.
Keep going! 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻😊😊😊
😊
How frustrating about the Red pictures. So relatable though!
How fun to have a light calendar – so much freedom to choose what you’ll do next. I’m sorry about the professor though – hope he finds his way to the next wonderful thing too!
Happy New Year, Elizabeth!
Happy New Year, Wynne. The professor had mentioned that he’s working on a new project, so I think he’ll be okay. It’s just a rotten way to be treated. I’m excited to not be so booked with “to dos” this year and start the new year quietly.
I like Wynne’s take that the clear calendar is a fresh opportunity to reassess and choose how to spend your days with intention. Cheers to a wonderful new year!
Yes, it is nice to not have a calendar full of commitments for once. I have ideas of what I’d like to do. Now I have the freedom to do it.
Sorry, I did smile at the missing card. I once went away for a weekend without the camera battery and never again. Those Quail are very picturesque. I would be very upset if I lost my job via email
I guess the big E was for empty — as in no card. Yes, I think firing someone over email is not right!
More of a clue would have helped insert the card
True!
If you find out what to do with your empty calendar, please let me know because I need some ideas! Love your quail.
Thanks! Right now I am trying to get over a bug I picked up on my flight home from our Christmas trip.
Oh dear! I hope you feel much better soon. K x
Thank you. I start to feel better and then overdo it and spend the night coughing. Next day I’m feeling lousy again.
Love the quail pics…they are so darn majestic, aren’t they? Cheers to a lighter calendar…I know you’ll use the time well – knowing the talented person you are! xo! 💝
I’m glad you enjoyed my quail photos, although I was hoping for Red instead! I will get back to editing manuscripts that I took a break from. Also, working on getting healthy. I’ve got a nasty cold now and surgery in a few weeks.
Take good care in every way…sending hugs. But you knew that, didn’t you? ❤️❤️❤️
You make me smile so big! 💕
Yay! ❤️🥰❤️
🥰
Beautiful photos! Wow. I’m sorry your class was canceled and your professor was let go. Seems very cold to tell him in an email. But I do like the calmness of January. I like to hunker down and just rest. It’s so dark and cold, it almost invites us into a little contemplation, allows me to cultivate my future projects. Hugs, C
Thanks! Yes, that was a harsh way to let the professor go. I am getting over a cold. So I am hunkered down, too! I am mulling over which projects I want to continue, or to start something new.
The quail photos are excellent! Too bad about your class cancellation and especially a bummer for how the instructor was treated. Enjoy the freedom to reconfigure how you’ll be using your time this year.
Thank you! The quail are good posers for me. Unlike Red who has been very flighty. I hate to see the professor treated so poorly. I think a lot of it is due to online and zoom classes. The administrators don’t have a connection to the students or professors.
Hello there! How are you doing today? It’s my pleasure to meet you here and happy New Year 🎊
Happy New Year to you, too!
Oh I hate a cleared calendar and face same issue with my writing class. I don’t know how to adapt yet
I’ve been sick so I just want to feel better. Then I’ll figure out what to do with my calendar. I’m sorry your writing class isn’t happening.
Your skill with camera has improved a lot Elizabeth. Sorry about the discontinuation of the photography class. But you have time now to dedicate to writing. Best of luck dear friend
Thank you for the kind comments about my photography. I will look forward to writing more.
You’re always most welcome

I love your quail photos. When my calendar clears, I usually do more reading, or, depending on the circumstances and how I feel, I might do some chores around the house. There is always a list of those ready to be tackled.
That’s so true. I got quite a bit done, finally gong through boxes I stuck in the guest room closet, plus going through years of photo albums.
Photos, oh my, we have plenty of those too. That’s the one we don’t know how to tackle.
