Ganesha, the Hindu God of Success
We were on vacation in Connecticut and visited a fun store in the town of Kent called Foreign Cargo. They had beautiful clothes, jewelry, odds and ends and art from around the world.
For some reason we were attracted to Ganesha, and had him shipped home. He arrived last night. The owner of the store shops around the world, has lived throughout the world and told us all about Ganesha.
This is what I found online:
Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god who rides a mouse, is one of the faith’s most important deities. One of the five primary Hindu deities, Ganesha is worshiped by all sects and his image is pervasive in Indian art.
Origins of Ganesha
The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears atop the pot-bellied body of a four-armed man. He is the lord of success and the destroyer of evils and obstacles, worshiped as the god of education, wisdom, and wealth.
Ganesha is also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, and Binayak. Worshippers also regard him as the destroyer of vanity, selfishness, and pride, the personification of the material universe in all its manifestations.

Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, the god of beginnings, wisdom, and luck and the patron of intellectuals, bankers, scribes and authors. Considering my husband is a financial advisor and I’m a writer, I think a little Ganesha can’t hurt!
It’s not like us to buy “stuff.” This was out of character, but I’m enjoying the creature and memories from our trip. I think I enjoyed our hostess’s statues in her guest apartment a bit too much!
What have you brought home from vacation that’s out of character for you?

I’ve stopped buying stuff when on vacation, except for tiny fridge magnets and little decorations. Even those are getting too much to care for.
This statue looks quite impressive.
We’re enjoying it. Not quite sure where it’s going to be placed yet. Right now it’s near the front door.
I think it’ll have maximum impact if it’s very visible.
Good suggestion!

😊
Interesting, it would not be my style, but that is the beauty of art/sculptures, etc. Buy what speaks to you.
It’s not really our style either. At least we have nothing in the home remotely like it. But somehow it fits.
The key is, it spoke to you!
The head of an elephant, with four arms and rides a mouse. There’s a lot of interesting imagery there! And I love how well he fits with all you and your husband do. Seems like a great way to bring home memories of your time with friends as well as an interesting touch from around the world.
Yes! Ganesha brings us memories of our trip, plus all sorts of good wishes for our home. Fun stuff.
We have bought mostly in character-a nutcracker concrete statue which Mike will paint for the garden. A Samurai guy was my purchase. I buy more out of character when alone I will do impulse shopping.
The nutcracker and Samurai guy sound fun.
Yes, I will post about it when Mike finishes painting. I am writing and editing my second novel and he is painting!
👍🏼
Seems this god embodies some contradictions! I don’t generally buy anything on vacation but refrigerator magnets and occasionally something to wear.
I love your Ganesha and how perfect for you and your husband. Where are you going to put her? Hugs, C
She or He? Is stationed at the front door on a piece of furniture so everyone entering the house sees Ganesha.
Ganesha is very cool. I like it and can see how it called to you. The only unexpected thing I can think of that I brought home from a vacation is a shot glass from the Hard Rock Cafe in Hawaii. I had the last bar shot of my life in that glass. 😵💫
I’m liking Ganesha. We had friends over and I told them about the Hindu God. They rubbed his head when they walked by. A shot glass from Hawaii is interesting.
