I have always enjoyed my quail and I’m looking forward to seeing babies. Certainly some of our quail are having babies? In the past, I’ve found nests in planters. As soon as I see quail families, I’ll post photos.

My favorite bird of all. Red is so striking.

Mrs. Is pretty cute, too! Isn’t it something how the males in nature have all the bright colors?

Red shares the spotlight with a quail. There’s always one quail who keeps watch for predators. He’ll be up higher and alone and start squawking if he senses danger.

Then there’s this guy. There are three chipmunks who hang out together. One looks like a parent with two babies.
What are your favorite characters in your backyard?
Here’s a PS I wasn’t expecting. I saw a foot and ankle surgeon about a painful left foot I’ve been dealing with for years. Finally, I decided to inquire about surgery. In the meantime, during our stay in the cabin on the lake last weekend, I fell and twisted my right ankle last Friday. I asked the surgeon (since she’s a foot and ankle specialist) if she could check it out for me while I was there for my left foot. Big surprise. I fractured my fibula and have been walking on it for five days! Yesterday was especially painful and swollen. No wonder. They are trying to get me into surgery ASAP. If you miss hearing from me for a few days, that’s why. I may have to wait for insurance approval and scheduling, but the sooner the better.

Right now my favorite backyard characters are some rabbits. I can distinguish three of them but there could be others. Our grass is a little tall and they are dining on it.
I have a few rabbits, too. They hang out with the birds and munch on the bird seed.
Oh no! I hope it’s wrapped now for support, but at least you have an answer now and can get things taken care of. Rest and start healing once they get things secured and stabilized after surgery EA.
They put me in a major boot yesterday and I’ll get a knee scooter today. Rest and healing is all I plan on doing while waiting for surgery.
Wow, I hope the surgery goes well. Those birds and chipmunks are counting on you.
Thanks! I told my husband right away that he’s taking over feeding the birds. He couldn’t believe that was the first thing I was focused on.
You’re like my wife. When we go on vacation, she worries about whether or not our housesitter is feeding the birds.
Ha! I had my husband go to the store and buy several birdseed blocks so he just has to put them out every two to three days.
Oh I’m so sorry about the fracture. Fibula is easy to break as it’s quite thin. Hope you get the surgery done asap. Lots of love and prayers for you dear friend.
Thank you! I am hoping to hear today or tomorrow that my insurance has approved the surgery and get scheduled quickly.
Best wishes my friend
Thank you!
🤗🤗🤗
Talk about “walking wounded.” Good luck with the surgery. We have a bright cardinal in our yard too. I like to watch him but he doesn’t like to stay in one spot for very long. He swoons in and out. A nervous guy.
Thanks! I’m waiting for insurance to approve my surgery and a date. In the meantime, I’ll be watching Red out the window.
OH geez. Good luck.
Aging isn’t for sissies!
No it is not. Have been wearing a knee brace for 2 weeks. Dogs got the better of me
That’s too bad. I had to wear an ACL brace like the football players do for about a year after knee surgery. I fell skiing.
I ruined my knees backpacking, the current issue, the dogs saw a rabbit I did not. In mid-stride the pivot did not go well.
Ouch! I hope you feel better soon.
Oh my goodness. Sending healing thoughts, for sure. Your post put a big smile on my face – especially the chipmunk at the end…and then I read your news about your fibula. Take care! 💕
I posted the photos before my doctor’s appointment. I was seeing an orthopedic surgeon about a problem with my left foot, but I asked her to take a look at my right “sprained” ankle. What a shocker! They are trying to get me into surgery by Friday. Thanks for your get well thoughts!
You bet! Sending love! ❤️
Thank you! I so appreciate it!
Yikes! I hope you get both ankles and feet working properly soon. My favorite backyard creatures are “my” lizards. We have great conversations while I’m working in my garden. I love how they are very curious and brave.
Lizards are interesting creatures. Although a nickname of mine in elementary school was Lizard and I didn’t like that! 😅 Surgery is scheduled for 5:30 a.m. Friday. I’m relieved to have it done so quickly. The other foot is put off until the fall.
Oh no. You and your poor ankles! I hope you get some good medical care and are on the mend in no time.
The birds are lovely; we don’t see quail here, but they are magnificent. I always thought it was terrible that the Male Species get all the bright colors, but I suppose that is divine intervention as they are trying to woo the ladies.
Keep us updated on your progress.
Thank you for your kind thoughts about my ordeal. Friday I have surgery, first patient in and out! I love my birds and put my husband in charge of feeding them. I gave him a schedule!
Oh mu=y goodness. That was a shocker of a tumble. Fortunate you had a visit with the right Dr.
Maybe a pun was intended 😁
I was in total shock. I walked on my “sprained” ankle for five days. Day five it really hurt and I knew something wasn’t right.
I’m sorry to hear about your fracture, Wickham. The red quail is so cute. My favourite backyard animals are my chickens.
Wow. You have chickens. We had chickens growing up in Washington state. Thanks for your well wishes.
You’re most welcome, Wickham. Have a lovely day as you are!
👍🏼
Your critter photos really have a higher quality since your class. Awful to hear about the leg! Good luck with surgery.
Thank you for your complimentary words about my photos. I can’t wait to be done with surgery, healed and start my advanced workshop with the same instructor to advance my photo journey.
We love the bright colours.
Thanks!
Your backyard characters look a lot like mine!
I hope your surgery goes smoothly. 😘
Thanks! I’m scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Sending healing and love your way. 😘💜
I’m so sorry about your tibula! I hope all goes well with surgery. Love your backyard characters — the chipmunk especially grabbed my heart!
I’ll be having surgery first thing tomorrow morning. I can’t wait to get back on my feet. But I’m using my downtime to work on a manuscript.
I hope you get your surgery soon and heal quickly! Your little backyard sweeties will be rooting for you, too!
Thank you! I’m the first patient tomorrow morning.
Catching up on news, just reading about your ankle. How fortunate that you had an appointment with the Dr for your other foot. Not ideal. On the bright side, your bird photos are amazing.
The surgery went well. I’m happy to be on the other side. Thanks for your comment on my photos.
Girl, you made me search for the story of your foot. Hope you heal well!
Thank you! So far the surgeon is very happy with my progress.
