What’s causing anxiety?

Beach in Mexico.

I woke up this morning with anxiety. In fact, I woke up several times during the night. I tried to figure out what I’m anxious about. Is it the world’s confusion and troubles? Is it the upcoming elections? Is it the economy and high prices? Is it the fact we’re leaving for a short vacation this week and I have a lot to get done before we leave?

Probably all of the above.

We are headed down to Mexico with another couple. I’m anxious because a year ago I didn’t know this couple. I’m sure we’ll all know each other much better by the time we return!

The husband is the brother of one of my husband’s best friends. I’m talking about our friend who died Thanksgiving 2021 from Valley Fever. He introduced me to my husband going on 40 years ago. I first met this couple at the services. We’ve made a commitment to keep memories of our friend alive and get together from time to time.

If you get anxious, what is it that triggers anxiety?

Would you go on vacation with people you weren’t that close to?

  1. I had terrible anxiety prior to my trip to Ireland last week. I understood it in relation to the way there- I’ve never flown internationally, I was meeting new people and people I haven’t seen in a long time, I had lots of details to remember… but it was just as bad, if not worse, prior to my return. The meetings and social stuff were over, and I had flown the route one way. But man, it was brutal. I wish I had answers for you, but hopefully commiseration is helpful too.

  2. My anxiety triggers? Easy (1) People who do not do their due diligence before running their mouth (2) People who lack critical thinking skills (3) Liberals….oh wait…that is redundant.

  3. I’m not sure anyone is immune from anxiety. Anxiety is high for all the reasons you’ve stated….especially this year. Add in the culture wars, and it gets higher. We’ve vacationed with Entrepreneur’s best friend and his wife. While friends for years, I never really got to know them on a deep, personal level….until we spent a week together! When I stop and evaluate anxiety, I believe it all comes down to trust. In whom or what do you trust your future? For me, the answer is obvious, but that doesn’t preclude me from feeling unsettled sometimes. 💜

  4. I mainly get anxious over my daughter, worrying about her. A little about my parents. But as for an anxiety scale, I am probably on the low end. I’m more likely to get sad or angry. As to vacationing with others…I’m not good at that. I have two best friends and we meet for a weekend each year and that’s awesome, but I’ve known them forever and can be open and honest and myself. With new people? Probably not.

  5. I think there’s a lot of ways to describe anxiety- different levels is what I mean, so triggers can be different as well. As to the vacation- maybe not one to one as couples without doing something in a group setting a few times first. That seems safer/easier because then you have a buffer plus more time to get to know them before plunging into other stuff. Good luck though.

  6. Having anxiety before traveling is very common. And add to it these people are relatively unknown that would make things a bit more complicated. I hope it all goes well.

  7. I hope you can have a wonderful time and not let your anxiety take over. As others have said, it is understandable! Going on vacation with people I didn’t know that well would be rather uncomfortable, but I hope you can be pleasantly surprised and that the vacation goes smoothly. I hope that you and your husband will have times that you can do your own thing that and that the other couple can do their own thing as well.

  8. I hear you, same with me, the night before we left for the Camino I didn’t sleep a wink! I’m not usually someone who worries a lot but I think my fear of not being physically ready for the walk had be on edge. So maybe it has more to do with our fears? And yours are justified but I believe you’ll be amazed at how much fun you’ll have with your new friends! Enjoy, hugs, C
