When I fill the Bird Buddy feeder I sometimes spill a bit of bird seed. Then if a quail gets into the feeder, he kicks the seed down to the ground and all his buddies show up.
I mentioned this in a comment to blogger Edward Ortiz and he said he’d like me to post a video of it in action. I finally got a quail to cooperate and jump in the feeder and kick the seed out. As you can see from the photo above the buddies were more than happy to show up for their part. It’s not the best video, you mostly see his topnot bouncing around. But if you wait he’s gives a good kick on the birdseed. It’s interesting that the quail on the ground often use their feet to scratch and look for more food.
Red isn’t one to kick birdseed to the ground — or share!

I’ve got a busy week ahead with some long days. I hope I have the energy! I’m looking forward to Friday when our daughter visits from Berkeley!
What’s on your agenda for the week?

I love his little quail squeaks.
So sweet!
The leader of the quail gets really loud if he senses there is danger. It interesting how there is always one keeping an eye out for everyone else.
These birds are very clever. Lovely picture of Red. Have a great week dear friend
Thank you! I enjoy watching the birds and their different personalities.
You’re welcome. Yes, like humans, they too have their own personalities.
👍🏼
We realized the other night that we are feeding deer from our front yard bird feeder. Drove up to the house about 8 pm and a group of 4 were munching away. We knew that deer cruised the neighborhood but not that we were giving them dinner! We just stood in the driveway and watched them keep eating 🙂
I would love to see deer like that. We used to have them munching on our jojoba bushes on the other side of the fence. I haven’t seen them for a while. Maybe they will be back in the spring.
Sending love and good energy! Thought of you this morning when a pair of mourning doves arrived on our deck. We haven’t seen a pair in months and months…I wondered if they’d wintered around here or made a trip north a little too soon. I’m gonna get some sunflower seeds out for them today! 💝😉💝
Thank you for sending your love and energy! How fun to have a pair of mourning doves on your deck. We have too many! But I’m thrilled to have all the birds visiting us! 💕
Xo!😘
🥰
Great videos, Elizabeth! Quail make the cutest sounds. ❤️ I’d love to be able to feed seeds but those darn Rock Pigeons ruined that. I know you have the energy to get through the week, you can do it! 💪🏻👍🏻😎
Thanks for the encouraging words. I was not prepared that my surgery would zap my energy and strength, but it sure did! I’m glad you enjoyed the videos.
This is too funny! This reminds me of when my father-in-law tosses handfuls of birdseed from his window every morning and the birds swarm. Apparently, they’re recently started knocking on the window when he hasn’t woken up early enough. 😂 You’re smart to leave it to the feeder!
I used to throw birdseed on the ground, too. I would have a swarm of doves and quail It works better to keep it in bird feeders! I haven’t had any birds knocking on the window though!
He’s got a whole fan club that arrives every morning. It’s really quite funny!
How funny that the quail kicks the birdseed often enough to be predictable! Love that handsome Red!
Hope you have a great week, Elizabeth!
Thanks! It will be a busy week, but also fun. I need to get the taxes going, too! Red is so fun to have as a regular visitor.
I often want to throw birdseed on the ground but we have this special recipe we use for keeping out the squirrels with some cayenne pepper mixed in. The birds come, but the squirrels don’t steal the food. Sometimes I am tempted to throw sunflower seeds just to see but mostly the squirrels will feel invited.
I’ve seen the cayenne pepper bird seed for sale at our local hardware store. That’s good you do it yourselves. I only had the squirrel in the bird buddy feeder once. I realized the feeder was too close to a bush so I moved it.
We mix it with cayenne pepper. Our bird feeder hangs from our cherry tree.
Interesting that the birds don’t mine the cayenne.
Let’s see…dog to vet for annual. Pedicure. Tea ceromony at the Met. Writing. Maybe I’ll sneak in a trp to the botanic garden
I would love to get a pedicure, but my surgeon told me to wait. That was the first thing I asked post op!
As it should have been your first question….
👍🏼
It’s the magpies who dump all the seed from the camera feeder. I haven’t refilled it for a while. Have fun next weekend!
The magpies are big birds, too. I’m excited to see our daughter. We were all together at Christmas, so this is a treat to see her again so soon.
Wow – you have a lot of visitors. You’ll need more bird food for sure.
I order it on Amazon because our grocery store quit carrying it except for 25 and 50 pound bags. Maybe I need to go with that!
Awesome! Thank you so much for the video. I was dying to see the quail in action. It was great, and even better to see how the quail kicked some of the seeds out for the others. It was perfect.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’ve been looking for days to see if I captured and quail kicking seeds and finally was rewarded.
I did, and I was really happy to see it. It made my day.
I’m so glad! 😊
Beautiful birds. I loved this post.
Aren’t the birds funny? I can almost hear them down there: “Hey, help out a fellow friend, could you?”
I’m so happy your daughter will be visiting! Is Waffles coming along?
She was going to bring Waffles, but it turns out Southwest went from free doggies in a soft case who fit under your seat to $200 for that privilege for where I stick my laptop or purse. She’s buying our second car and driving it back up to Berkeley. She’s staying in our old home town on the road trip where she was born and raised until college. The hotel wants $150 for Waffles. Waffles won’t be coming 🙁 She’s also not happy dad is making her buy the car! He’s giving her a huge discount. The car is a 2015 with less than 50,000 miles and it’s not like we don’t know the history of it! She tried two years carless but finally thinks she needs one again.
Waffles travel fees add up! 😳🤣
She has a family who takes care of Waffles if she doesn’t travel with him. Those kids have a white board with a countdown of when Waffles returns to their care, so he’ll be in good hands!
