Saturday our guests left and I had most of the day to myself. I took a long walk and captured this cholla with my iphone. I love the blue sky! I did have to make a trip to the grocery store to restock the fridge. I did a lot of cooking for my guests. My favorite dinner was our last. Chilean sea bass (my favorite fish) and steamed clams (another all time favorite.)
Sunday, I tried to do nothing after another long walk, but sit in the backyard, read and listen to podcasts — and my favorite bird Red. His singing voice is simply a joy to hear. I had a visit to the bird buddy by a female Cardinal. Maybe it’s his mate?
I’m not sure what to name her. Because of her quieter voice and color, I don’t notice her like I do my buddy Red.
Our guests were so kind and grateful. They were here to scout a nearby lake for an upcoming National Spearfishing competition. They are serious and have won world championships before. This is the second visit to the lake for one of them. Then they are coming back to stay with us the week of the competition in April. They will spend more time underwater, looking for where the fish live. I wonder if other teams prepare like this?
I kind of wish I didn’t go all out cooking for them. (But it was nice to get their compliments.)They will be back in a few weeks with the third member of their crew. I may tell them in advance that I won’t be cooking every night! That they need to know they’ll be on their own. Our casita does have a full kitchen and of course they can go to restaurants.

Another photo from Saturday’s walk. I loved the blue sky and contrast with the beautiful plant. Although I don’t know what type if plant it is.
How was your weekend? How did you fill your days?

Hmmmm. I blew out my knee, more, so everything was a little tainted by that. But I had a good book club, saw a totally awesome 80s cover band, saw Novacaine, and went to dinner with my family and actually saw the celebrity chef who.owns the restaurant
With a blown out knee that’s a huge amount of things you did over the weekend!
Cabs. I never take cabs but did so all weekend. And luckily the movie theater is on my avenue so bus down and bus back up.
I’m impressed that you didn’t let your injury slow you down.
I was so looking forward to everything. I just didn’t dance at cover band concert but I wiggled in my seat
Ha! At least you were there!
😊
👍🏼
My weekend was uneven. On Saturday [!] a landscaping crew arrived to start our spring clean up. It was a glorious sunny day, but we were stuck inside at home. On Sunday it rained all day, was gray, and I didn’t want to go anywhere. Kind of a ho-hum weekend overall, but considering our lifestyle I can dub any two days in a row a weekend so not a disappointment.
Isn’t it funny how we have to stay inside when people are working outside? I’m hoping we don’t have any rain until our roof leak is fixed.
I would call mine uneventful. Laundry- some I still need to put away (!) a movie and discussion of it with my youngest, lots of back and forth texting about houses with my oldest, salad prep for the week…just the typical stuff I guess 🙂 I hope we get to see our own blue sky by tomorrow. Lots of rain lately.
That sounds like a nice weekend spending time communicating with your kids. We went from a rainy week to a week in the 80s and 90s! I’m not ready for the heat but it’s supposed to cool down by the end of the week.
Love hearing that you got some down time and a game plan for the return trip – when your friends stay again. A full kitchen in the casita? I betcha they can figure it out and you can cook a bit…but not quite so much. Cheers to you! 🥰
Thanks! They might even enjoy not having to dine with us after a day diving in the water.
Right! Could be! 🥰❤️🥰
They are on the lake and free diving eight to 10 hours a day! I’d want to be left alone after a day like that.
Oh my goodness…I’d fall asleep before I could even think about dinner! 😜
Exactly! 😁
Love that you feel rested and restored. That female bird is beautiful! It’s hard not to want to go all out for our friends so I love your idea to set the expectations, including your own, in advance!
Yes, they are close enough friends to be upfront and honest. I enjoyed resting this weekend with intention. I didn’t feel any guilt or thinking I was being lazy!
Mrs Red seems a sweet lady. I’m glad you got time to rest and recharge
I do hope she is Red’s mate. Cardinals mate for life. It felt good to have downtime. 😊
That’s what was needed.
I love watching the birds! She is lovely and it’s so interesting how they eat their seeds.
You are the most gracious host. We generally alternate cooking for and going out with our guests, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming to me. Luckily for us, our people are pretty easy and take care of themselves.
Spearfishing? Wow, that is very interesting indeed!
I think we should follow your plan of alternating dining out with cooking. Now that I’ve seen Mrs. Red on camera, I’m spotting her around the yard.
Your seafood supper sounds like one of my faves, too. I’m curious about what lake around there is good for spearfishing. You really do deserve a break from cooking since they are coming to stay again so soon!
Your shrub is a blooming creosote bush. Larrea tridentata.
Thanks for identifying the creosote. The national spearfishing competition is in Lake Pleasant which is a large man made lake. The seafood dinner was delicious.
