A new friend at the beach bringing a ball to my husband.
After our evening beach walk and swim, we were relaxing in beach chairs watching the waves. Suddenly, a small dog ran to my husband and dropped a ball at his feet. We looked around for his owners, but there was nobody close by.
My husband threw the ball. The speedy little pup raced after the ball and ran back to us, dropping the ball at my feet. It was my turn.
The pup alternated between the two of us for 30 minutes, never tiring of chasing the ball.

The dog is waiting in anticipation for the ball to be thrown. If you look in the ocean there is a couple out there.
Eventually the couple who were body surfing in the waves came onshore.
“Is this your dog?” my husband called out to them.
“No, he’s yours now,” the man replied. We all laughed. The dog trotted over excitedly to his rightful owners.
The dogs on the beach are so entertaining to watch. There’s a man who lives a few houses away from Kevin Costner, who walks his black lab every morning with a tennis ball launcher. That dog is so excited and jumps and circles, crying for the ball to be thrown. He runs back and forth chasing and retrieving the ball for an entire hour walk. We watched a pair of Vizlas chasing balls from their owner’s tennis ball launcher, leaping to catch the balls in the air before they hit the sand. Then there are dogs who pick up sticks two to three times the size of their bodies and proudly trot them down the beach.
Here’s a video of our new friend racing after the ball:
If you have a dog, do they like to swim, chase after balls or carry sticks?
What other creatures are as happy as a dog at the beach?

Awh! A wonderful friend to make. 😊 Our Yorkie is too old and tired to chase anything now. LOL!
Our Sheltie loved to play soccer with my son. She would chase the ball all over the yard.
Dogs are so wonderful. I’ve had dogs my entire life until we had to put our yellow lab Angus down. We couldn’t go through the heartbreak again.
I am so sorry! I understand the heartbreak. It is really tough. Our Sheltie died in March and I miss her a lot! I look at our Yorkie and have wondered the same about her being our last dog, for you do become so attached to them. I have had dogs all my life as well, and I don’t know if I can get used to not having one.
The only upside to not having a dog is I get to take care of my daughter’s pug from time to time. She studied abroad one summer and he was mine. Then I got to babysit him for two weeks while she traveled this Spring. Also, we have our cat Olive to keep us company.
I’m much more of a dog person than a cat person, but cannot have either where I live. Your new friend was probably thrilled to have all that play time.
I loved how the puppy knew how to take turns and let us each play with him. He must do that with his owners. I think he enjoyed hanging out with us.
So sweet! I love that the pup adopted you two! I think there are few things that can compare to the fun of the beach for dogs!
I bet Cooper loved your beach vacation!
He’s a friendly little boy
He was so cute! It’s funny how a few dogs want us to throw their ball or sticks. On a walk, one dog ran up to us with a stick and my husband threw it just as the owner called out, “No!” It turns out the dog was recovering from surgery and the owner wouldn’t throw the stick, so the dog found someone who would.
Very clever doggy

Oh, what fun!!
Every day at the beach is fun. I’m enjoying watching the dogs and didn’t know we’d get to play, too.
Delightful…a very happy, furry friend! 🥰
Yes, it was a fun time playing with the pup.
Don’t you wish you could enjoy life through the eyes of a dog?
Yes! In fact I had an idea years ago to write a story through the eyes of dogs on an island we used visit in the PNW. Maybe I’ll give it a try to write through the eyes of the dogs I’m seeing on this vacation.
sounds like an entertaining idea.
It would be an interesting writing exercise at least.
I read a book some years ago written from the POV of a squirrel, well a family of squirrels and their world. It wasn’t a children’s book.
Really? It wasn’t a children’s book? One of my favorite children’s books I bought for my kids was “Diary of a Worm.” It was hysterical.
“Diary of a Worm,” sounds right down my alley. I think the squirrel book is on my iPod which hasn’t been charged in 2 decades. If I can find a charger I’ll look see.
That was the issue with my e-reader. I went back to books.
Me too

A quick Duck Duck Go search and I found it. Called “oh Rats!”

Thanks. I’ll take a look.
And apparently I am very immature the reading age is 8-12
I like reading children’s books, YA and adult books. If the writing is good and the story is compelling, why not?
Umm, I’m pretty sure he’s your dog now. He’s adopted you. What are you going to call him? Rover? Ha ha, cute how he kept coming back for more!
Ha! The owners said we spoiled him and he’d never be happy with them again.
So you went home with a dog? Ha ha
Almost 😅
That’s hysterical! What an adorable and sweet dog. I imagine he was pretty happy to have found you two to play with. Such a beautiful beach. Now I have to go catch up on your other posts! Hugs, C
Thanks. It was fun to have a dog to play with, but not bring a wet, sandy dog home!
A bit of doggy entertainment at the beach is perfect! Our current dogs have never been on a beach. They aren’t much into retrieving, but they will run after something thrown (a dog toy, not a stick).
Some dogs will chase and not retrieve. We had so much fun with that pup at the beach. We are happy to babysit our daughter’s pug or play with beach dogs and not have our own right now. Maybe in the future. I’m thinking about it, but Olive the cat would be stressed.
This is really cute, Elizabeth! Our dog is a senior now, almost 14, but in his younger days, he loved to chase tennis balls. He was great at fetching but not at returning the ball. 🙂 He’s part chocolate lab, but has never liked the water. We adopted him, so maybe his fear stems from a past experience. The lab in him has never jumped in the water.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Our last dog was a yellow lab and he loved the water. We couldn’t keep him out of it. We were too heartbroken after putting him down to get another dog — yet. Some dogs love to chase but not retrieve!
A delightful encounter with a playful pup at the beach brought joy and laughter to your evening. It’s heartwarming to see how dogs, with their boundless energy and enthusiasm, can instantly brighten our day. Their simple joy in chasing a ball or retrieving a stick is infectious and a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.
Dogs definitely seem to be the happiest creatures at the beach, but I’d say dolphins come pretty close! Their playful antics in the waves mirror the joyful spirit of dogs frolicking on the sand. It’s a beautiful sight to behold.
Thank you! You captured their spirit.
