We had a huge thunder and lightening storm with tons of rain. My phone called it “severe” and said to stay inside. It started Thursday in the middle of the night. The thunder was as loud as we’ve heard. I was sure our house had been hit. The house lit up with lightening every few seconds. We lost a lot of sleep as the storm stayed right overhead and didn’t go away. We continued with downpours the next day until the afternoon.
But with the sun peeking through the clouds, I saw the trees sparkling with raindrops that looked like diamonds (photo above.)

There was so much rain that our sunken pool bar flooded. There’s a grate over a drain under the table but the ground was so soaked it took more than a day to drain.
Below is a video of the rainstorm with thunder in the background. You can see how I flinched at the beginning when a loud crack of thunder hit.

Once the storm left us, the backyard got back to normal.

Mrs. in the tree a few branches away from Red.

I wonder where Red and Mrs. were hiding during the storm?
Is your weather changing for Fall? Or do you still have Summer weather?

Severe storms are awe-inspiring. We had a short deluge yesterday afternoon that flipped the switch from summer to autumn. Trees began to dramatically shed leaves and *kaboom* we have cooler fall temps.
Severe storms are breathtaking. We had rain again overnight which is great. We’ve had a couple dry years where our monsoon season never happened. I’m glad you had a storm and your fall weather is arriving.
I’m learning storms can come up almost anytime here. They just roll in off the Rockies so I’ve already experienced a few late night loud ones. Tomorrow the high country gets snow and we get rain, lots of rain then it’s back to 80 degrees for the week. This is nothing like predictable Washington 😉 Lovely pics of Red & Mrs in the tree!
Thanks! We visited Colorado years ago. I remember the weather changing from sunny to rain and back to sunny several times in a day.
Wow! That’s some rain storm.
It was! Besides being so strong it continued for 10 to 12 hours which is really unusual. We even had rain last night, too.
I think signs of climate change.
We normally have a monsoon season with tons of rain. It has been dry for two years and now it’s raining again. We are having another downpour right now. 2025 is a La Nina year, which means cooler and wetter weather due to weather patterns over the Pacific Ocean.
We also have monsoon season- mid July to mid August. This year we had an extended rainy season and heavy flooding.
That’s right! We didn’t have a monsoon season the past couple years.
Hope it is the regular season.
👍🏼
I always wonder where birds go during storms. We had a couple of big storms over the weekend, and I kept thinking about them.
There must be some safe places in trees or under bushes. I’m surprised they don’t find a place under our patio. We had another downpour this morning. The birds were in our backyard and then they disappeared.
Beautiful photos, E.A.! Everything always looks so much more vibrant and alive after the rain.
It’s so pretty with the sun on the tree. Did you have thunder and lightening, too? We had more rain last night and this morning.
Yes, not as crazy as it sounds like it was in your area, but we did have some thunder, lightening, and light rain the last few days.
That would be nice, but not quite as exciting as up here.
Sometimes Mother Nature needs to let us know who is in charge. Being in Florida, we know what you went through last night. Anyway, our Fall is not here yet. Since our “Fall” is usually only about 12 hours long, it is easy to miss. We know it is winter when the A/C only runs for 1/2 a day.
At least we don’t get hurricanes. You’re an expert at storms. I used to say that we only had a few good days of weather in Palm Springs. It was mostly too hot, but then it would get too cold in the winter. Only a few days were just right.
I love storms and then the bright washed day that follows. Mr and Mrs Red must have a cozy hideout somewhere nearby. We are experiencing a golden autumn here in Austin, Nevada. Wonderful fresh air, yellow rabbit brush, and turning aspens. Such a lovely time of year.
That sounds lovely! We have continued with rain. We had a couple hours of sunshine when I got the tree photo. Then back to more rain, which is good.
There’s something about that pool bar pic that really, really speaks to me, Elizabeth! Looks like Europe…looks like somewhere I’ve been. Long ago. Love it!
And yup! Weather’s changing…leaves are falling but it’s oddly warm. Near 80 degrees F. here in the Chicago area today. 🌞💝🌞
The prior owners who built this house put in some unique features. I wonder where you saw something similar to the pool bar? Our neighborhood has Tuscan-style architecture. The pool bar was my hideout or blind to photograph birds on the other side of the pool. I haven’t used that space since I broke my ankle — and it’s been too hot. If it cools down soon, and isn’t flooded with more rain, I’ll be back in my bird blind!
That’s it! Very French or Italian cafe vibes! 🥰❤️🥰
We were in Florida over the weekend where it was hot and humid. We got off the plane to be greeted by 60s and lovely early fall weather
That sounds like a perfect homecoming!
We caught a bit of rain yesterday but not nearly as much as you did. I would love to have a thunder storm run through our area but we haven’t had something like that for a while. I love how everything looks – and smells – so clean after a good washing.
I agree it looks so clean after a good downpour. I wrote a post about the smell after a rain. It’s called petrichor. I learned a new word writing that post! Ours smells like creosote. The creosote bushes give bits of oil in the rain after being dry for long periods.
Wow – that is quite a storm! Dramatic! I wonder where Red and the Mrs were. So interesting!
I find it amazing how the critters can find a safe spot to protect themselves in those torrential storms. Heck, didn’t seem to bother your alligator one bit!
I love the diamonds in the trees.
We’re definitely trending to fall. We had a loud thunderstorm and rain last night, but fairly brief. Did bring a good amount of rain. Nice and sunny today!
It was exciting to have stormy weather, but I wish I could have slept through some of it! I think we’re headed for fall, too.
