It’s almost time for National Novel Writing Month. I’m on their email list and they’ve begun a six-week NaNoWriMo prep.
Last year was my first attempt at writing a rough draft of a novel during November. I did it!
But what I didn’t do was back up my manuscript. How or why? In any case, my laptop had a hardware issue and most of my files disappeared including my 50,000 word novel!
I called Apple and they tried for days to recover my files on icloud and my hard drive. No luck.
I’ve begun rewriting my novel and changed the point of view from one character to four characters alternating their stories. I’m at about 25,000 words. It’s added depth to the characters rather than viewing them from one perspective.
The emails from NaNoWriMo have motivated me to finish the manuscript. I’ll use their prep weeks to improve what I’ve written so far.
NaNoWriMo is giving me a second chance with this idea! I’m starting today. I don’t have to begin with a new idea. It’s just the push I need to complete this rough draft — again.
Have you tried the NaNoWriMo challenge?
Would you consider doing it this year with me?
I’ve started a new work that I think can be a novel, but I’m using Graeme Simsions book as a guide, so I’m not doing nano… but if you want to bounce ideas off each other I’m in. I’m also starting a writing class in a few weeks
That’s great you’re taking a writing class. I haven’t heard of Graeme Simsions. I’ll have to look that up. I’m open to sharing ideas any time.
I love his book The Rosie Project. So I figured I’d try his book
I will definitely check it out.
The Rosie Project is wonderful. I suggest listening to it in Audio, an Australian actor narrates, so good.
Thank you for the info! Will do!
I went to the NanoWriMo site I don’t see how to sign up for the pre-prep emails. So many spinoffs for Nano too, not sure where it is. HELP?
Under Writer’s Resources you can find a lot of things to work on. Here’s a link to the prep. https://nanowrimo.org/nano-prep-101#howtonanoprep
Ok, thank you!
Loved that book too!!
Great on starting a writing class. I’m working on some things too. I see a Critique group forming. LOL
💗💗
I don’t have what it takes to write a book. I wish you all the best EA
Thank you!
You’re most welcome 🙏🏼
👍🏼
Best wishes to you on the re-write! I’ll be busy writing a nonfiction book for my publisher all winter. (Actually starting now.) I do hope to do nano some year. Maybe next!
Thank you for the well wishes. Is it the California gold book or another one?
This is a new book on Colorado cemeteries.
👍🏼
Best of luck EA, and remember- back up, back up, back up and external storage!!
Thank you! I have two thumb drives that are 1 tb each! I back up each day.
I’ve never done it. I’m not sure I have a book in me
You never know until you try. The secret is to write without editing to get 50,000 words done in one month.
I have participated before. My one thing is:. I have already started writing a book. Would it be against the rules to copy what I have written at the beginning as part of the word count? Technically, it would be going from writing to typing. I might get free Internet in case I decide to participate so I can use my Laptop. I have forgotten how this all works.
I just read the rules. I think I might sign up! I can rewrite what I have written starting in November and definitely embellish and continue it.
That’s what I may do, too. I have 25,000 words done, but I can obviously rewrite those. Or start where I left off and then rewrite. My goal is to get the manuscript done and in better shape than when it disappeared.
I’m only going to write 25,000 words to reach the goal. Of course, I may write more, but I just want to use the month to motivate me to finish my manuscript.
Just signed up! How can we be Buddies?
I think informally? Maybe email each other and offer support and encouragement 😊
I always hear about NanoWriMo, but have not joined. I guess if I did it would make me more dedicated to writing, right. I have to look at the rules again. Thanks for reminding us about it. November is right around the corner.
Their prep course which is vital for figuring out your characters and plot is underway now. I’m not too worried about the rules. I’ll take advantage of it to keep me writing and motivated.
Good plan. I’ll look at their site. You are right, I bet the prep course is beneficial. Thanks
