  1. I’ve read a few from the list. The one that stands out is TS Elliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”! I vaguely remember having to do a major analysis/discussion of that poem. Enjoy your reading this month!

  2. I’ve read Metamorphosis and Hills Like White Elephants, as well as much of the poetry. I’ve always especially like Rilke. Happy reading!

    • Langston Hughes “What happens to a Dream Deferred?” is a favorite that many young people understand completely. Wonderful in its simplicity. “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock” reminds us to keep memories close and never forget our dreams. Enjoy .

      • English major, and big reader. I also taught as an adjunct and in the district English Instructor. The readings for one university really started to change from classics to all these stories with a message and newer style. I found that I did not enjoy teaching as much with the new curriculum. It is the same with the public library. I went in recently a nearby library and was surprised at the choice of some of the trending books. Definitely different from my expectations but I guess someone is reading it. Things have changed, so it is nice to see the old classics like Hughes, T.S. Eliot.

      • Interesting background you have. My son and DIL were Literature majors in the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara.

When my daughter, who is three years younger than my son was in high school, they quit read fiction all together. Bill Gates Foundation gave their high school a grant and restructured what was to be taught. They only read non fiction and non fiction magazines.

      • Very very interesting. Gates also gave a big grant to the local school district and things changed. They also made some teachers critique other teachers and created jobs that went away when there were no monies left. The grant run out as did the funds. Now those teachers were no longer mentors, much to the relief of other teachers. Now, the English program is online. Interesting.

      • I thought it was out of line for one person to change school curriculum nationwide. He didn’t feel that today’s workforce needed to read fiction anymore.

      • I agree. It really led the down path for my local school district when they ran out of his money. My local school district is one of the largest in the country.

  3. I don’t recognize any of the reading material, sorry!
I love that ritual between you and your Mom. Did you wake up and say it out loud to her on 12/1? I would!!

  4. We read
    ‘Babylon revisited’
    ‘Hills like White Elephants’
Poetry: The Rilke and Lawrence texts
    We miss any novels there.
