Booking flights

Would you have second thoughts about flying after hearing about the Alaska Airlines flight with a door flying off?

What bothers you about how the incident was handled?

  1. I have absolutely put my head in the sand about all this ‘door flying off’ business. Not me at my best, but it’s a self-care thing. Wow. Your sentence, “To be fair, it was on “restricted” flights. The plane wasn’t allowed to fly to Hawaii, where it would be over water” was an eye-opener. Ummm…you mean there are planes in the AIR that aren’t approved to fly over WATER? I may be a dumb bunny and late-to-the-party, but in the event of a catastrophic emergency, truly, what’s the diff? Oh my. I’m with you, Elizabeth. Scary, scary, scary. (But your sunset pics are fab!) 😜

    • That “restricted” flights really bothered me. If they know a jet needs repairs, why not ground it until it’s fixed? Yikes! Every night we get treated to gorgeous sunsets. My phone is getting filled with sunset pics 😊

      • Keep ’em coming. Except for my brief glimpse of a pinky sunrise yesterday, we’re socked in with gray clouds. xo! 🥰

      • The clouds make our sunsets beautiful, unless it’s totally socked in like you are. My work around with my phone caused troubles posting. I scheduled this post yesterday for this am from my laptop. It had to be posted from my phone! So I had to figure that glitch out today. 😬

      • You know…this relates so much to Brian’s post for today on HoTM…tech is great…and actually LA posted about tech, too…but despite the advancements, there’s still so much to learn and be aware of. Grateful…but. Know what I mean? Your troubles remind me that we all need to be our own ‘help desk’ some days with work-arounds. Cheers to you for finding one! 🥰🥰🥰

  2. We were planning to fly this summer, but are now having second thoughts. Dr. Zeus’ uncle died in the Northwest Airlines Flight 255 in 80s, so he’s always been afraid of flying. This event has, I think, reignited that fear.

My cousin is also a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines, out of Seattle, and she said there’s lots of internal chatter about DEI hires and how the airline has made a big deal about hiring diverse candidates, and there are concerns that those hires aren’t necessarily the most qualified for the job.

    • That’s horrible about Dr. Zeus’ uncle. I’m so sorry. Yes, I’d be afraid to fly too. My friend is based in Seattle, also. I had no idea about DEI hires. She got hired after 55, her first airlines job. She probably checked off a box or two.

  3. I only fly when traveling abroad. If I hear of such an incident on an international flight, I would think twice about flying on that airline.

  4. My travel now is to see the girls in Colorado and I use Southwest as they have easy and multiple nonstops into and out of DIA/SEA. They do fly the Max but it’s the 8 series which for now seems okay. My concern is more with Boeing and how crappy their work is becoming in general

  5. Love the sunset pics. I know that air travel statistically is still safer than driving but it does give me pause. I think that the media coverage is partly to blame – because they make it so sensational. Which isn’t to say that it isn’t big news but that my perception of it changes based on how much it’s on the news. I hope you have safe travels, Elizabeth!

  6. I am planning a trip to FLA to visit with the parents while they still remember who I am. My wife looked at me and said, “They knew there was a problerm and continued to fly the plane!” I totally get the concern, but driving 1,800 miles is not an option. I will use American who fly Airbus and 737 (up to Max 8s – which is entirely a different risk). I feel like the heightened attention will make the choice of planes and their condition even better.

  7. I do think flying is quite safe as a rule, but when something goes wrong, it can be catastrophic! I mostly fly only international. I did fly to Cleveland recently as driving would have been iffy in December and wanted to leave the truck for hubby. I would not really worry about the freaky things that happen. Could die in a car wreck any time. Or heart attack. Just sayin’.

  8. Another blogger with the image block issue says she is using the classic editor as a work-around. You may wish to try that instead of using your phone. I always use classic for blogging.

  9. It is scary to hear of things like that, but we hear of horrible automobile crashes almost every day and we still get in our cars and drive. Now if a certain airline was having problems like that repetitively than I would second guess flying that airline for sure, but not second guess flying. Overall I say its still a lot safer compared to driving!

  10. Forgot to comment about your photos before I posted my comment. Beautiful pics! Really glad you were able to post them. I saw where a reader wrote about using the Classic Editor. That’s what I use, and I have never had an issue wiht posting photos. My issue is that my I have almost maxed out storage space allowed for images. Not sure what I am going to do about that.

  11. Having seen the aftermath of the plane sans door, I know I’ll be more careful to check which model of plane I’m booking our flights on. Talk about scary. I did see a funny meme that used John Bender’s [Judd Nelson] iconic line from The Breakfast Club: “Screws fall out all the time. The world is an imperfect place.”

    • That’s it. The world is an imperfect place. I read that you can check to see what kind of plane you’re on when you book tickets, but often airlines change planes. So it really is imperfect.

  12. From what I know, even after the recent incident with the side of the plane blowing off, air travel is the safest form of travel in terms of volume of people and frequency. It’s one of those things. Car accidents are really common but that doesn’t stop me from driving. And visiting places like Mexico can be dangerous as you know but I’m still going in a few months. I think we have to be careful but we can’t live our lives around a freak accident. Book your flights. Hugs, C
